UK: car drivers use a road atlas. what [non-GPS] books/maps do seafarers use especially when near a coastline:?

is the reeds almanac any good? what other tome is a standard navigation aid for UK coastal waters......ie: what did people use before the invention of GPS, to navigate coastal waters?
